Going to Trader Joe’s on a Saturday is like a suburban middle class version of the Hunger Games, so when a Muslim woman shopping in Virginia kindly let a woman go ahead of her at the checkout line, it should have been an appreciated gesture.
Unless, of course, that other shopper thanks her by saying, “I wish they didn’t let you in the country.”
Yup, that really happened, and it’s caught on a video that’s been viewed more than four million times and counting.
Comedian Jeremy McLellan posted the video on his Facebook page on behalf of his friend to help bring awareness to the treatment she received. He wrote about the encounter:
McLellan’s friend, who wishes to remain anonymous, alleges that the interaction took place after the woman started commenting on another Muslim customer in the store who was wearing niqab.
The Muslim woman taking the video said that she told the woman it was up to a woman’s personal choice and started recording after the woman said, “I wish they didn’t let you in the country.”
The horrible woman goes on to say that Obama was a Muslim and that he might end up in jail, at which point the Muslim woman expresses some concern for her mental health and suggests therapy. The nut case then says, “Oh, I’m fine. I’m very normal.”
It’s that phrase that really got people on Facebook going — that and the fact she had a whole freaking cart of a couple of avocados.
The scariest part?
There are probably people right now — maybe even those elected into power — who would see this behavior as “totally normal.”
