The world has been coming to terms with the tragic passing of legendary rock singer Chris Cornell over the past 24 hours. The former Soundgarden and Audioslave singer passed away yesterday at the age of 52, just hours after performing with his Soundgarden band mates to a packed crowd in Detroit.
In a statement to the Associated Press, his representative Brian Bumbery described Cornell’s “sudden and unexpected” death, which came as a shock not just to his legions of adoring fans across the globe, but those closest to him also.
It has been reported that the legendary vocalist was found dead in the bathroom of his room at the MGM Grand in Detroit, having performed a Soundgarden gig in the city mere hours prior. The timing of his passing has only added to the sense of tragedy, particularly considering the messages of excitement that the late singer had posted on social media in the lead up to Soundgarden’s Detroit concert. Now, stories of Cornell’s conversations with fans immediately following the gig have been reported, in what are thought to be some of his last words.
In the post gig meetings with fans, the singer was said to have been behaving “absolutely normally” and spent several minutes with the public sharing messages of warmth and love.
It has been reported that Chris Cornell stepped outside of the Fox Theater at roughly 11.25pm along with his band mates, and spent time with his fans before being taken to his hotel along with the other Soundgarden musicians.
The Daily Mail claims that the singer posed for photographs with fans and told some that he would see them in Columbus, Ohio – a later stop on the band’s tour. The newspaper further reports that Cornell said “I love you” to fans as he was whisked away from the front of the theater.
Not long after this, Detroit Police are thought to have received a call to the MGM Grand Detroit Hotel close to midnight, where they found the legendary vocalist dead in his bathroom.
A spokesperson for Detroit Police described the events thusly:
When the units arrived they were met by a gentleman who indicated that Chris Cornell had been found in his room. When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive and he had passed away. We are investigating it as a possible suicide but we need to wait on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death… We are at the beginning stages of the investigation and we can’t say anything about the scene.
It is thought Cornell’s wife, Vicky Karayiannis had asked friends to check up on the singer after becoming concerned that she had received no communication from the him at the hotel.
Brian Bumbery suggested that the vocalist’s surviving family, including his wife Vicky, ex-wife Susan Silver and three children from those two marriages will assist medical examiners in determining the cause of death. Chris Cornell leaves behind an astonishing legacy through his music. May he rest in peace.
