A citation sent via mail initially had a few people nervous, but now its become a hit on Reddit. Two photos posted by user Exsupervillain on Imgur were also shared as a link to the social news content site.
The story behind it has received more than 26,000 upvotes on Reddit and over 872,000 views on Imgur. It might be one of the most clever pranks a person could think of doing.
The urgent envelope stamped with a sheriff logo read: “Notice to Appear: Return Service Required.” Not knowing what may be inside, just by looking at the picture, would make anyone nervous.
Usually when you receive a letter of this kind, it’s not for a good reason. No one likes to be summoned to court, especially if you’re being reprimanded for breaking the law.
Yet, after opening the envelope, it took a turn for the best! At the top was a big red stamp highlighting the “appearance” date.
When you're marrying a sheriff you don't get invited to a wedding. You get summoned.. 😂Via: http://imgur.com/gallery/TslPZ
The mock citation then led to only two options titled “Graduating From.” The only two choices were dating and engagement, and they were both marked.
That’s when things started to make sense. Scrolling down through the details of the form, the first subheading read “Wedding Ceremony,” and had the date, day, and time set for Friday, May 26, 2017, at 4:30 p.m.
This was not an actual court summons, but a wedding invitation! Now, that’s a bit of relief!
The second subheading, “Hors D’Oeuvres, Reception, Dancing to Follow,” made things even more exciting. It included an RSVP at the bottom, requesting a response by April 14, 2017.
The form even required invitees to sign their name confirming “I promise to appear at the time and place indicated above.” Thankfully, it was a notice to appear at a wedding and not a court hearing.
Exsupervillain originally titled this photo-story: “My aunt is marrying a sheriff. Their invite nearly gave everyone a heart attack.” Hilarious comments on Imgur agreed that it gave them quite the scare.
“I would’ve thrown that [invite] straight in the trash and moved in the next 10 minutes,” said a user named Hedbrah.
Others thought it would be a good idea for their future wedding: “I’m going to make a police officer friend and have him do this for when I get married.”
While some comments made jokes about serving donuts at the reception, another person made a genius remark: “I’m guessing Jail House Rock will play at least once.” Well, that would make for a perfect song to end the night, wouldn’t it?
Most of the confidential information in the notice is marked out, but a bar code at the bottom gives away some very important details about the lucky couple: their names. So, whoever you are Matt and Nancy, thanks for startling us with this criminally creative wedding invite and congratulations!
