We live in a time of unrest — socially, racially, and politically. Sometimes it feels as if there will never be peace between people.
Now, Hurricane Harvey — recently downgraded to a tropical storm — is ravaging Texas and Louisiana. Officials state that 31 deaths — along with many more injuries — are due to the storm, and in some places, there have been more than 50 inches of rain.
Thankfully, there have been many volunteers helping, shelters are open to victims, and President Trump visited Corpus Christi, Texas, to show his commitment to rescue efforts. There has also been a huge effort among celebrities to help those struggling in the aftermath of the storm.
Bullock donated $1 million to the Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. Elizabeth Penniman, Vice President of Communications for the Red Cross, expressed gratitude for Bullock’s donation.
“It’s times like this when we do receive such an incredible amount of support. Especially during times of disaster, people see what’s happening in Texas and our hearts all go out to them,” Penniman said.
Bullock said that despite what is happening in the country politically, this is a time for Americans to come together. In the wake of this disaster, we need to put our differences aside to help our fellow Americans.
“There are no politics in eight feet of water,” Bullock said. “There are human beings in eight feet of water.”
Bullock said that she is proud to do her part in helping provide shelter and supplies to victims and their families. “We all have to do our part,” she said.
“It’s been a tragic weekend, and unfortunately, the worst is yet to come,” said Brad Kieserman of the Red Cross. There is still so much need for rescue efforts, donations, and prayers.
In the midst of tragedy, Americans are stepping up to help their fellow citizens in need. It is inspiring to witness the generosity of celebrities like Sandra Bullock and to be reminded of the common humanity of all of us.
