As workplace injuries go, this is a pretty startling one.
It is not hard to imagine putting your back out while lifting some heavy crates, or perhaps a chef suffering a severe burn while plating up during a particularly busy lunch shift.
In the world of pornography, though, it seems wise to expect the unexpected.
Certainly, being a porn star is not what a traditionalist would consider a “normal” profession – though depending on your feelings on the porn industry you may or may not agree with that statement – why, one might venture, should working as a porn actress be considered any less normal than any other profession?
As porn looms ever more largely in the mirror of public consciousness thanks to the advent of social media and the vast reach of the internet, the public is learning more and more about how the industry works, perhaps finding out that it is not as murky as they might have expected.
Certainly, though, even for a porn aficionado, the story of Molly Cavalli and her promotional shoot for a porn website would be considered startling and highly unusual.
Far from just another day at the office, Molly Cavalli was swimming inside a shark cage as part of her promotional duties for the porn website Camsoda.com, when things went suddenly – and very badly – wrong.
Camsoda.com say that Cavalli was swimming happily away when a lemon shark – a species not normally thought of as aggressive toward humans – approached the cage, making the porn actress nervous. She then apparently swam to the top of the cage where the shark was able to bite her foot.
The incident was captured on video that has subsequently been uploaded to YouTube and viewed more than four million times, although some seem to doubt the authenticity of the proceedings. You can watch the video below, although do think twice about watching the video if you are squeamish; it’s not one for the faint hearted.
Despite the apparently gruesome scenes, some commentators seemed to doubt the legitimacy of the video, branding the footage a “publicity stunt” and others have suggested that the deep cut that Cavalli apparently sustained didn’t look much like a shark bite.
For her part, Molly Cavalli has taken to Instagram to reassure concerned fans that she is on the road to recovery;
Thanks for your well wishes guys. I’m totally fine. It’s not as bad as it seems. Im healing quickly. It was still an amazing experience. Much love to my @camsoda team for taking good care of me.
Darren Press, the Vice President of CamSoda described the incident thus;
From what we gathered, lemon sharks are predominantly docile and relatively docile.
During the broadcast, a shark approached the cage which made Molly nervous. She swam up to the surface as the shark approached. Her foot rose above the protective net and was bitten.
We immediately pulled Molly out of the cage and rushed to shore.
Cavalli seems to be looking on the bright side of things after telling fans the injury “only required 20 stitches” – which still sounds like rather a lot to me.
