With the myriad number of controversies and scandals that the Trump administration has had to deal with over the president’s first term, it seems increasingly unlikely that Donald Trump will make it through another year in the White House, let alone win a second term in 2020’s Presidential elections. Now that the FBI is investigating his campaign’s alleged links to Russia, the word “impeachment” seems to be on everybody’s lips.
That being said, no-one gave the former businessman much of a chance the first time round. The notion of a Trump administration was nothing but a tongue-in-cheek joke almost right up until the day it became a reality.
Donald Trump has already proved that he can defy convention and criticism, and bounce back from polarising comments and political scandals that would have crippled other politicians.
But that bounce-back ability appears to be showing the first signs of waning, after impeachment started being touted as a legitimate reality for a President who has reportedly passed sensitive information to Russian officials. If he does make it through his first term in the White House, though, he could find himself up against an entirely unexpected adversary if he is to win another four years as the leader of the free world, none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The Rock recently told GQ that it is a “real possibility” that he could take a run at the Presidency, “A year ago it started coming up more and more. There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think.”
This will be, to some, ocular proof that the world has finally gone mad, while others will presumably be welcoming the concept of a start to a new decade without Donald Trump at the helm, guiding the United States into ever more treacherous waters. The notion that 2020’s Presidential race could amount to something akin to a Hollywood blockbuster showdown between a former businessman and reality TV star, and a bonafide silver screen leading man is an extraordinary one, but with the multitude of bizarre global events currently raining down around us, does anyone truly have the capacity to be surprised anymore?
What’s more, it seems clear that, at present time, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would have a considerably strong chance of beating Donald Trump, after polls released by Public Policy Polling revealed that the former wrestler is considered a preferable choice to America’s current President. As Public Policy Polling attests;
Trump trails by wide margins in hypothetical match ups for reelection. He does particularly poorly against Joe Biden (54/40 deficit) and Bernie Sanders (52/39 deficit.) We also looked at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s prospects if he were to run for President as a Democrat.
The poll added that “36% of voters see Johnson favourably to 13% with a negative view of him, although 50% of voters have no opinion about him either way. Both Democrats (38/15) and Republicans (31/17) see him positively. Johnson would lead Trump 42/37 in a prospective contest, and wins over 15% of people who supported Trump last fall.”
While The Rock will still be seen as an outsider to assume the Presidency in 2020, on current form he seems to have a significantly greater chance that the White House’s current incumbent.
