There are some people who should simply not be parents. While it’s not exactly possible to predict who will or won’t be a child abuser, this story will make you wish there was a definite answer.
It takes a certain sick person to neglect or abuse a child. It makes me question humanity when I see or hear about a particularly nasty case.
Derick and Mikala Boyce-Slezak, both 22, took their 4-month-old infant son to the hospital on April 11. They claimed the child had a “rash.”
But after doctors examined the boy and ran a CT scan, they determined that he had multiple head injuries, including a “vertical left parietal fracture of the skull and a small left subdural hematoma.”
A hematoma is usually caused by traumatic brain injury, and happens when blood pools between the brain and the skull.
What the parents claimed was a “rash” turned out to be a burn. The size is unclear, but it was large enough to be mostly second-degree burns with the surrounding portions being first-degree.
While Mikala had claimed in court that “someone had cleaned the infant’s face with a towel that contained a bleach-type disinfectant,” causing the burns, when asked about the head injuries, she pleaded the Fifth. Her husband did not testify.
That individual reported that Mikala had said Derick dropped the child while attempting to imitate a commercial he’d seen on TV.
I can’t fathom just what commercial he’d seen to be imitating it and then dropping his infant son. Was he standing on the couch pretending to be Rafiki with Simba from The Lion King?
Because those are severe injuries, especially for a child. There’s no excuse for that sort of stupidity.
But it gets worse. That same Children’s Division employee stated Mikala had said she “had reason to believe Derick had placed the infant in a microwave and turned it on for a ‘short period of time.’”
What on Earth did he think he was doing when he put a baby in a microwave? It’s a sad reality that sometimes, through user error, babies are accidentally dropped — but putting anything living into a microwave is no accident.
That’s the sign of a twisted individual. It’s also a sign that these two should not be allowed near children.
This report is real. The female defendant reportedly told a social worker that the male defendant caused burns to the…
It’s unclear at what point the child was removed and given to social services, but he has been and is, thankfully, in the care of more responsible foster care. Derick and Mikala are both jailed on $500,000 bond.
Neither have attorneys. They may want to look into that, because they’re going to need some seriously good defense to get around this heinous crime — but they should get the punishment coming to them.
The only good in all this mess is that the innocent baby boy is now in loving hands, and the parents are being brought to justice. Thankfully he survived, and we hope he will continue to thrive.
