A Florida mom is facing serious charges after her 3-year-old son managed to fire a gun when he was left alone in a car.
According to Inside Edition, Abbie Maldonado had just driven to the Good Shepherd Academy to pick up her son from school when she decided to leave her toddler son alone inside the car.
Maldonado later explained to police that she had only left her son alone for a few minutes so she could quickly pick up her older child.
According to officials from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Maldonado left the back of the car open to keep an eye on the little boy.
But just moments after exiting the vehicle, Maldonado reportedly heard a loud bang.
Police say Maldonado still didn’t realize the noise was a gunshot, not even after she walked back to the vehicle to take her toddler to the bathroom inside the school.
According to police, it wasn’t until she returned to the vehicle that she realized the glass in her driver’s side window was crackling.
Investigators say the little boy had managed to get his hands on the loaded gun before firing a single shot into the window.
Police reportedly discovered the missing bullet lodged in a door frame, according to Inside Edition.
Once she realized what had happened inside the car, Maldonado ran back inside the school, where 911 was called to report the incident to police.
«Nobody’s hurt, but we had a parent that has a concealed weapon permit and a child got a hold of it and pulled the trigger,» the caller said.
Around 3:45 p.m., police arrived at the scene to assess the situation and soon slapped Maldonado with a felony charge of child neglect.
According to deputies, Maldonado explained that she typically keeps her loaded gun locked in the trunk of the car, so it remains unclear exactly how her son managed to find it.
Because she was arrested, Maldonado’s boyfriend had to come to the scene to pick up the children.
On KXAN’s Facebook page, many commenters shamed Maldonado for allowing her children to be alone in a car with a gun, while others didn’t think it was such a big deal.
“You never leave a gun in the door pocket of your car….put it in a lock box or trunk especially if there are kids who might find it,” one commenter wrote.
“If you put just a little more left spin on this, you might just break a real story. she had to leave the weapon in the car, instead of on her person, ’cause she’s not allowed to carry on the campus. the child found the weapon. so, she compled with one law, and fell into catch 22,” another added, “haters gotta hate.”
