Colleen Walker was full of excuses when police arrested her for child neglect. Just minutes prior, they had to rescue her 5-year-old sun from a scorching hot vehicle.
The boy had been left in the car by Walker in direct sunlight with no AC and only one window rolled down. When rescuers arrived at the scene, the temperature inside of the car had already reached upward of 107 degrees.
It was only due to a good Samaritan who heard the child screaming that the authorities were alerted. “He was hanging onto the steering wheel and just screaming,” the passerby told WFLA.
“It broke my heart.” Thankfully, they were able to get the young child out of the car and into the shade in time, but authorities said he was lucky to be alive.
“We get cases and cases where, 10, 15 minutes the kid is dead,” a firefighter told Walker sternly. But Walker was quick to retort that her child had wanted to stay in the car.
Surveillance footage showed her shopping around the nearby Dollar General with her daughter for about 30 minutes. According to Walker, this was longer than expected.
Still, she was quick to refute any blame. “He wasn’t in the car for two hours, it was like, 12 minutes,” Walker told a firefighter.
Luckily, he was quick to shut her down. “Don’t get all huffy and puffy because I’m not going to feel bad for you. I don’t care,” he said.
Protests and excuses aside, the negligent mom was quickly cuffed and placed in a patrol car to be driven to jail. She now faces up to 5 years in prison if she is convicted.
She didn’t help her case at all on the drive when Walker came up with a request. “She was complaining that the back seat of our patrol car was too hot on her way to the jail, and asked the officer to turn the AC up,” Lt. Dan Dietrich told WFTV.
Hopefully, that taught her something. Both of the children were placed in their father’s care.
