A man was knocked out cold and left with a shattered jaw after being headbutted by a kangaroo while out hunting in Western Australia.
Nineteen-year-old Joshua Hayden was hunting with this brother on Tuesday night when they spotted a trio of kangaroos, ABC reports. He apparently leaned out of the window and prepared to take a shot, but one of the kangaroos charged at the moving vehicle.
«It actually collided with the side of the car and smashed the front window,» Joshua said. «Then it bounced back onto me and headbutted me straight in the jaw.»
Joshua said he was left unconscious for about 30 seconds before coming around, initially believing his brother had been the one to deck him.
«I woke up and my brother was trying to tell me what happened.
«I said ‘No, you hit me’ and he said ‘No, the kangaroo did’.»
Joshua’s brother then took him to Kellerberrin Memorial Hospital, where he was advised to go straight to the Northam Emergency Department, before being referred to the Royal Perth Hospital.
He was told he’d have to wait 10 days for surgery, because his face was too swollen to operate on — as you can see in the photo, along with his pretty nasty black eye and a cut across his left cheek.
Joshua explained that he and his brother regularly hunt kangaroos for food, but he’s never seen one fight back before.
«Out of all the times we have been out [in the] bush I have never heard of this before,» he said.
«The kangaroos are going crazy these days. As soon as they see a car, they hop right up to it and give it right back.»
While Joshua has never seen one react in quite this way, kangaroos are widely known for being an animal you don’t want to mess with — and seem worlds apart from their cuddly-looking cartoon equivalents like Kanga and her son Roo in Winnie the Pooh.
