Do you think anyone has ever had quite as much fun playing a movie character as Johnny Depp has playing the swaggering, swashbuckling, entirely morally bankrupt pirate Captain Jack Sparrow? I don’t.
If there ever there was a marriage of actor and character forged in the benevolent irons of heaven, it is surely Johnny Depp and his most famous creation, who has been the face of one of the most lucrative and popular movie franchises of our time.
Perhaps it is Cap’n Sparrow’s complete lack of a moral compass (and possession of one that only points North), possibly it is his braggadocio and bombastic sense of humour, his delicious mockery of the pompous Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly (in character, of course). Whatever it is, Depp struck gold with his portrayal of the world’s best/worst pirate, and audiences haven’t been able to get enough for quite some time now. It probably also helps that the legendary actor gets paid a truly eye-watering amount to walk the gang plank and rig the sails, film after fanciful film.
You may well have heard the story of Depp and his nautical comrades trip to a London school, in character and dressed to the nines, after he received a letter from a nine-year-old girl asking the would-be pirate and crew to help the school children stage a mutiny against their teachers. Depp and company, filming nearby, duly obliged.
His fan-pleasing days as the strutting Sparrow are not yet at an end, thankfully, and neither are his surprise public appearances as the character either it would seem, after the actor appeared at Disneyland California recently.
Fans of Pirates of the Caribbean – and presumably Johnny Depp – were treated to an entirely unexpected performance from the actor, after he appeared on the immersive Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland California, interacting with customers in character as Jack Sparrow as they sailed past him on boats.
It seems clear that the guests had no idea that Depp would be appearing in advance, making for a truly magical surprise for those lucky enough to witness the legendary actor up close and personal.
It’s not everyday that you come to Disneyland and see Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the pirates attraction surprising fans and having their reactions recorded lol. 😂 Due to the popularity of this video and comments, we can’t respond but We give our consent to repost with credit to those of you asking. 📸 To everyone else asking, this wasn’t a known event. It was a surprise and yes Johnny Depp really did dress up as Captain Jack Sparrow and was talking to guests. They were filming boats interacting with him and we are thinking it’s new promo for the new Pirates of the Caribbean — Dead Men Tell No Tales film which is coming out May 26, 2017. Quite how I would react to being brought face to face with the genuine, bona fide, real-life Captain Jack Sparrow (let alone the fact that it is literally Johnny Depp), I can’t guarantee, but I doubt its an experience any of the ludicrously lucky theme-park-goers will forget any time soon.
Depp will reprise his role as the buccaneering pirate in the latest instalment of the prolific franchise, Salazar’s Revenge. Our favourite pirate protagonist will find himself face to face with all manner of grizzly apparitions and monsters, including a star turn by the man who can turn any villain into the most terrifying character imaginable, Javier Bardem, who will play Salazar himself.
Fans will hope that the new film will manage to recapture the magic of the franchise; with the rum-clutching hands of Depp’s Sparrow at the helm, it would seem that Salazar’s Revenge cannot go too far wrong.
