The wildly popular singer/songwriter is currently in the midst of a period of astonishing success; his latest album, Divide, achieved the unprecedented upon its release by securing an absurd nine of the top 10 places in the UK singles chart, and 16 of the top 20, despite the non-deluxe version of the album having only 12 tracks on it.
The album also just so happens to be the fastest selling record from a UK artist of all time, surpassing legendary music acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and, of course, One Direction.
Ed hasn’t let the success go to his head though; he has remained notably down to earth and unflustered by his astronomical success; when asked in a recent interview how he chooses to spend some of the fortune he has amassed over the course of his still relatively fledgling career, he told an interviewer that he has built a pub in the basement of his house. Of course he has.
Possibly it is due to his music, which is, at times, tender and sensitive, or his quiet, reflective demeanour, but I always had Ed Sheeran marked as a pretty lovely guy, and I am delighted to report that my – and everyone else’s – suspicions have been proved correct by a touching story involving the singer and young fan.
15-year-old Triona Priestley’s last wish was for her favourite pop star to sing her favourite song: Little Bird.
In a remarkable story, Priestley’s family reached out to Sheeran in the hope that he could grant her final wish, and just hours before the brave girl sadly passed away, he got on the phone to a member of the Priestley family, who then put her on loudspeaker; leading to a heart-wrenching, incredibly touching few minutes.
Triona Priestley’s brother, Adrian, recalls the events of that day:
I just remember the day.
We were in this small little ICU room. There was myself, my brothers, our partners, my parents, Triona’s godfather, his wife and the hospital staff.
Triona was in a huge bed, covered with tubes and machines, a little box window ahead of her on top. My brother Colm left the room but he returned then and he was on the phone. He says ‘I’m going to put you on loudspeaker quickly’ and clicks it and we hear Ed Sheeran.
He says ‘Hi Triona, I hear you’re a big fan.’ He heard that her favourite song is Little Bird and he begins to play and the guitar comes through. He plays the whole song. We tell him very quickly thanks very much and that we have to go.We have to hang up on him. It was probably a bit rude at the time. The doctor lifts his stethoscope to tell us her heart has stopped. We take the mask off because she had been on a machine to breathe.Just in that moment, I can remember a burst of light comes through that window and she’s smiling.”An unforgettable story of an incredibly brave girl and her favourite singer, who was there to make sure that her last wish would not go unfulfilled.
Here’s what social networks say about this:
Val Russell Apparently even other famous people have said he is a really nice, down to earth guyNice to hear fame and fortune haven’t ruined him
Heidi Lile Dreher Good for him. Shows there are good people in the world and that not all celebrities are self centered.
Tessa Tran This is beautiful and sad at the same time. Little Bird is my all time favourite tune also. RIP
Ryan Anderson What a nice gesture. Mad respect to Ed for showing he cares. May she rest in peace 😔
