Every time we step up security with alarms, wireless cameras, or even a loud dog around the house, it seems like criminals are a step ahead of us.
t’s just what they do. However, their newest ploy to get in your house, as clever as it is, can be stopped by being on the lookout and knowing what to do when you see it.
The post by a Facebook user reads:
When the person finally went away, Kim found something odd on her door…a rubber band wrapped around the handle and the latch.
When she called the sheriff, she was surprised to learn that this wasn’t the first time he’d encountered such a trick. “The Sheriff came by yesterday and said this is happening all of a sudden, as soon as you unlatch the door, they do not wait for you to turn the knob, they can bust in on you.”
The best advice, as usual, is to NOT ANSWER THE DOOR if you don’t know who’s on the other side or don’t recognize the voice.
To keep from being targeted to begin with, try to keep your trash concealed in the bins. Criminals will also use the amount of trash they see to figure out how many people live in a house and how often they’re away.
You can also get a security system for your house. They’ll be less likely to target a house that could make a loud noise or commotion if it’s broken into.
Failing that, you can just “fake” it with a sticker. Some criminals know what to look for, but others will be turned off enough to target another home.
Motion-sensitive lights in visible areas do well, too. Burglars will often flee if they’re seen, or if they think that some in the house got suspicious and turned the lights on.
And if you have expensive items, criminals also look for them in the obvious places (bedroom, bathroom, nightstands). Try hiding them in your children’s room if you have one. They rarely bother with the kids’ rooms.
And reinforce your door. Sometimes the easiest way in, especially if there’s no one home, is to kick it down. So reinforce it as much as possible with locks and extra wood.
Even if it doesn’t thwart robbers, you’ll sleep better knowing these mechanisms are in place. They’re easy, so why not give them a shot?
